"Buoyant Buoys II" Wood Blocks in Epoxy Hand Turned Vase on Western Washington Maple

A buoy is one of the most honest objects on the water — it marks something real. A channel, a hazard, a mooring. It bobs and rights itself in every swell, salt-faded and sun-worn, doing its job without complaint. Beachcombers know them by their texture, the way the ocean rounds every edge and bleaches every surface until something utilitarian becomes something beautiful.

The nautical soul sees beauty in the worn and the weathered — in rope frayed at the ends, in wood polished by tides, in the geometry of a ship's hull reflected on still water. They are drawn to things with stories, to objects that have been somewhere, survived something, and come out the other side transformed.

This vase holds the spirit of that journey. Wood blocks are suspended in sea-blue epoxy resin, revealed in cross-section by Jeff's lathe — their angular shapes caught in the current of the resin, each one a piece of something that crossed water. The base is turned from Western Washington maple, its pale grain as clean as a dawn beach. It is a piece of the coast, made into something that can live wherever you take it.

🪵 Care Instructions: This vessel is finished with oil — there is no epoxy coating or sealant on the wood. It is intended for dry use only. Do not use for liquids, food contact, or wet storage. Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Occasional re-oiling with food-safe wood oil will keep the wood looking its best.
